Our 2021 Barolos reviewed by James Suckling

Updated: May 5

BAROLO SARMASSA 2021

A classic and intense Barolo with potpourri, dried cherries, bright red currants, fresh fruit and elegant

cinnamon on the nose. Fresh rather than deep, it’s medium- to full-bodied with precise ripe tannins that are super juicy and chewy. It’s crisp and tight in the finish. Incredibly fresh, so it is drinkable now, but it’s intended for the long haul. Try from 2027.

BAROLO CANNUBI 2021

This has aromas of earth, sweet spices and flowers. The palate is angular and flavorful, medium to full-bodied, with intense fruit, chewy yet polished tannins and a mildly chewy, flavorful finish.

Better in 2028.

BAROLO PREDA 2021

Intoxicating and vibrant nose to this wine, with orange peel, bergamot and potpourri, strawberries, cherries and deep-set balsamic notes. Medium- to full-bodied, it shows tight, firm tannins with crisp acidity and a chewy finish. Such a muscular wine. Slightly dusty on the finish. Intended for the long haul, but one to follow. Try from 2027.

BAROLO DEL COMUNE DI BAROLO 2021

Very clean aromatics, showing rose petals, red cherries and a subtle balsamic note, as well as some sweet spices derived from aging. The palate is full- bodied, elegant and refined, with fine, polished tannins and a lightly juicy finish. Already great, but will improve with bottle age. Better in 2026.

BAROLO NOI 2021

Aromas of sage, sliced plums, black cherries and aromatic herbs. The palate is firm with upfront fruit and a polished yet imposing tannin structure. Attractive freshness. This should evolve into a very pleasant Barolo. Best after 2028.
